Terms of Use

Effective date: June 6, 2026 · Version 3 (Voice & Journal)

The short version

Mooring is for adults 18 and older.

The conversation is generated by AI, not a human.

Mooring is not therapy, counseling, medical care, or a crisis service. It is a wellness tool to support general emotional processing through conversation with an AI.

If you subscribe, your subscription auto-renews until you cancel through Apple's subscription settings. Cancelling is easy — instructions are in Section 5.

1. Acceptance of these Terms

By downloading, installing, or using Mooring, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use Mooring.

These Terms form a binding agreement between you and Daniel Kernan, the operator of Mooring (referred to in these Terms as "Mooring," "we," "us," or "our"). These Terms apply to your use of the Mooring iOS app, the trymooring.com website, and any related services.

2. What Mooring is

Mooring is an iOS app that supports general wellness through structured expressive disclosure conversations. Mooring lets you talk through whatever is on your mind, either out loud (voice mode) or in writing (text journal mode), with an AI built to listen.

Modes

Mooring offers three modes, available in both voice and text:

  • Unload: for getting something off your chest and being heard.
  • Sort It Out: for thinking through something complicated.
  • Walk In Lighter: for closing out the day before walking in the door.

What Mooring is NOT

Mooring is NOT a substitute for mental health care. Mooring is not therapy, counseling, psychiatric care, or any form of clinical mental health service. The AI is not a licensed therapist, counselor, or clinician, and cannot diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. If you are experiencing a mental health condition, please seek care from a licensed professional.

Mooring is NOT a crisis service. If you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, contact 988 (call or text), text HOME to 741741, or dial 911 if you are in immediate danger. Mooring will provide these resources during a session when warranted, but cannot intervene on your behalf, contact emergency services for you, or escalate concerns to anyone else.

Mooring is NOT designed for acute trauma debriefing. Mooring is designed for processing what happened today, over weeks and months. It is not intended for the moments immediately after a traumatic event. Multiple meta-analyses have shown that aggressive emotional disclosure in the acute aftermath of trauma may interfere with natural recovery; Mooring is positioned deliberately away from that approach.

Mooring is NOT a substitute for human connection. Mooring is a tool for moments that other forms of support can't reach, not a replacement for real relationships.

3. Eligibility — you must be 18 or older

Mooring is available only to users 18 years of age or older. By using Mooring, you represent that you are at least 18 years old, that you have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement, and that you are not barred from using the service under applicable law.

The onboarding flow includes an age gate that terminates onboarding for users under 18. We do not knowingly permit minors to use Mooring. Consistent with California SB 243, we acknowledge that AI companion chatbots like Mooring may not be suitable for some minors.

4. Your account

Mooring is accessed through your Apple ID. You are responsible for safeguarding access to your Apple ID, the security of your device, and all activity that occurs under your subscription. Mooring is designed for individual personal use; you should not share access with anyone you would not want to have access to your sessions.

5. Subscription terms

Mooring is offered as an auto-renewable subscription with three tiers and a free trial. The specific terms below are what Apple's App Store requires us to disclose clearly.

5.1 Available subscriptions

TierMonthlyAnnualWhat you get
Text Only$7.99$79.99Unlimited text journaling. All three modes.
Base$17.99$179.991 hour voice per month, unlimited text journaling. All three modes. 30-minute maximum per voice session, unlimited sessions per day.
Premium$29.99$299.992 hours voice per month, unlimited text journaling. All three modes. 60-minute maximum per voice session, unlimited sessions per day.

"Unlimited text journaling" is subject to a reasonable daily usage limit, set well above normal use, to prevent abuse and protect service quality for everyone. This limit applies to all plans, including the free trial.

5.2 Free trial

New subscribers may be offered a 3-day free trial. During the free trial:

  • Voice access is limited to 10 minutes total across the 3 days.
  • Text journaling is available throughout the trial, subject to the same daily fair-use limit that applies to all plans (see 5.1).
  • All three modes are available in both voice and text.
  • A payment method is required at signup.
  • You will receive a notification before the trial ends.
  • If you do not cancel before the end of the trial, your subscription will automatically begin and your payment method will be charged for a Base monthly subscription (or whichever tier you selected during signup).

5.3 Auto-renewal

Your subscription automatically renews at the end of each billing period at the then-current price, unless you cancel auto-renewal at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID account will be charged within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period. Subscriptions may be managed by you, and auto-renewal may be turned off, in your Apple ID Account Settings after purchase. No cancellation of the current subscription is allowed during an active subscription period, but you can manage and cancel future renewals.

5.4 How to cancel — it's simple

You can cancel your subscription at any time through Apple's subscription settings:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap Mooring, then tap Cancel Subscription.

If you cancel during a free trial, you will not be charged. If you cancel after being charged, you will continue to have access until the end of your current billing period. Mooring does not control Apple's refund process; refund requests must be made through reportaproblem.apple.com.

5.5 Price changes

If we change the price of a subscription, we will notify you in advance through the App Store. Continued use of the subscription after a price change constitutes acceptance of the new price. You may cancel before the new price takes effect.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Mooring while operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner. Mooring's voice mode is designed for hands-free use through CarPlay, but you remain responsible for safe and lawful driving at all times, including keeping your attention on the road and complying with all local laws. Mooring's text journal mode is not available in CarPlay by design.
  • Attempt to circumvent any technical restrictions, including voice session length caps, monthly usage limits, or trial restrictions.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app.
  • Use Mooring in any way that violates applicable law or these Terms.
  • Impersonate any person or misrepresent your identity in a way that would mislead Mooring or other users.
  • Use Mooring to harass, threaten, or harm any person.
  • Share, sell, or transfer your account access to any other person.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access to Mooring for users who violate these Terms.

7. AI conversation disclosure

Mooring's conversations are generated by artificial intelligence, not a human being. Voice mode is powered by Hume AI's Empathic Voice Interface 3. Text journal mode and post-session reflections are powered by OpenAI's GPT models. The AI may sound conversational and emotionally attuned, but it does not have feelings, awareness, or memory of previous sessions in the way a human would.

This notice is provided in accordance with California Senate Bill 243 (effective January 1, 2026), which requires operators of AI companion chatbots to provide clear and conspicuous notification that users are interacting with an AI system rather than a human.

Mooring is operated from New York. We also provide this notice in accordance with New York's Artificial Intelligence Companion Models law (General Business Law Article 47, effective November 5, 2025), which requires operators of AI companions to clearly notify users that they are not interacting with a human and to maintain a protocol that detects expressions of suicidal ideation or self-harm and refers users to crisis service providers.

Safety protocols

In accordance with California SB 243 and New York General Business Law Article 47, Mooring maintains protocols designed to detect statements suggesting suicidal ideation or self-harm and to respond with warm acknowledgment and gentle referral to crisis resources rather than abrupt termination. These protocols are encoded in Mooring's system prompt and are reviewed regularly. Crisis resources are provided in the AI conversation when warranted and are listed in Section 8 of these Terms.

Mooring is not a crisis-response service. The AI cannot intervene on your behalf, contact emergency services for you, or escalate concerns to anyone else.

8. Disclaimers — Mooring is NOT therapy or crisis service

MOORING IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL MENTAL HEALTH CARE. If you are experiencing a mental health condition, you should seek care from a licensed mental health professional. Mooring does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.

MOORING IS NOT A CRISIS SERVICE. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, contact one of the resources below or dial 911. Mooring will provide crisis resources during sessions when warranted but cannot intervene on your behalf, contact emergency services, or escalate concerns to anyone else.

Crisis resources

  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988
  • Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741
  • Frontline Helpline (first responders): 1-866-676-7500
  • Safe Call Now (sworn personnel): 1-206-459-3020
  • Emergency: dial 911 if in immediate danger

9. Stored content and your control

Voice audio is not retained past your session. Voice session transcripts are ephemeral and discarded when the session ends, unless you tap "Reflect" to generate a post-session reflection.

Text journal entries are stored encrypted in our database so you can return to them. You can delete any entry, or all of your entries, at any time in Settings → Data & Privacy. Saved reflections are stored encrypted and deletable the same way. Account deletion removes all stored content within 30 days. See our Privacy Policy for full details on what is collected, how it is used, and how to delete it.

10. Intellectual property

Mooring — including the app, the brand, the voice characters (Moira, Bob, Mary), the system prompts, the post-session reflection templates, the system design, and all related materials — is the intellectual property of Daniel Kernan / Mooring. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or lease any part of Mooring without our written permission.

You retain ownership of the content you create in Mooring (your text journal entries and the text of your conversations). By using Mooring, you grant us a limited license to process your content as needed to provide the service, as described in our Privacy Policy.

11. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mooring is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that Mooring will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that the AI's responses will be accurate, complete, or appropriate for your situation.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Mooring's total liability for any claim arising out of or related to your use of the service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid Mooring in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).

Mooring is not liable for indirect, consequential, incidental, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, including without limitation loss of profits, loss of data, loss of goodwill, or other intangible losses.

These limitations apply to the maximum extent permitted by law. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you.

12. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Mooring and Daniel Kernan from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of Mooring in violation of these Terms or applicable law.

13. Termination

You may stop using Mooring and cancel your subscription at any time, as described in Section 5.4. We may suspend or terminate your access to Mooring if you violate these Terms or applicable law, or if we are required to do so by law. On termination, your rights to use Mooring cease, but provisions that by their nature should survive (including intellectual property rights, limitation of liability, and dispute resolution) will continue to apply.

14. Dispute resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of law principles, except where preempted by federal law or state consumer protection laws applicable to you.

If you have a dispute with Mooring, please first contact us at legal@trymooring.com so we can try to resolve it informally. If we cannot resolve a dispute informally, any claim arising out of or related to these Terms or your use of Mooring will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in the United States.

This section does not waive any rights you may have under applicable consumer protection laws, including the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the California Unfair Competition Law, or California SB 243, which authorizes a private right of action with statutory damages of the greater of actual damages or $1,000 per violation, plus reasonable attorneys' fees.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app, by email, or both, and we will update the effective date at the top of this document. Your continued use of Mooring after the effective date of the updated Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes. If you do not accept the updated Terms, you may stop using Mooring and cancel your subscription.

16. Miscellaneous

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Mooring regarding your use of the service. If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms is not a waiver of that right or provision.

These Terms are in addition to, and do not replace, Apple's Standard End User License Agreement (EULA) and Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions, which apply to your use of the App Store and any apps you download from it.
